What It Is

Subdomain transfers occur when you've built a new site meant to replace an old one on a system like S&T Sites, or when you contract with a new vendor service and want the old subdomain to point to it.

For example, if you're a design team and have an existing site at aidesignteam.mst.edu, but you've created a newer redesigned site at sites.mst.edu/aidesign2, you can request a subdomain transfer of aidesign.mst.edu to apply to your new site. You may wish to pair this with a site backup and/or site removal request for the old site.

Subdomain transfers do not apply to Terminalfour sites. Official departments and offices have their subdomains managed automatically and do not have the ability to create new sites without a department site request or academic site consultation request. If you're working with Marketing on one of these requests, swapping subdomains should be handled via a go live request.

What you need

Before requesting a subdomain transfer, you need the following things:

  • Your name, email, and relation to the site
These will be used to track your request and contact you when the redirect is ready
  • Your advisor's name and email if part of a student organization
Your position in the student organization will be verified before any requests are approved
  • The subdomain you wish to transfer
This will be the base URL of your site, starting with https:// (e.g. https://formulasae.mst.edu)
  • The URL that the subdomain should mask onto
This is where your new site is currently viewable, likely https://sites.mst.edu/<site name>. If this is a vendor service, it may be an external URL off the mst.edu domain.

Guidelines

  1. Subdomain transfers require an existing site using the subdomain currently.
  2. Subdomain transfers are available to student organizations, research groups, labs, etc.--generally groups that are not official departments or offices directly part of Missouri S&T's organizational structure. In the majority of cases, if your site is on S&T Sites, subdomain transfers are available; if it is on Terminalfour, they are not.
  3. Subdomain transfers are also available for vendor services, for example when one vendor contract ends and another replaces it, and should reuse the existing subdomain.
  4. Subdomain transfer requests will be reviewed by Marketing and may be rejected. Common reasons for rejection include:
    • Transfer not approved by advisor or supervisor of group
    • Non-vendor sites that are off the mst.edu domain, or not on S&T Sites
    • Site does not qualify for a subdomain according to S&T Sites subdomain assignment rules, even if it has been given one in the past
    • Sites no longer in active use or severely outdated
    • Sites that reflect poorly on the university's image

Process

To request a subdomain transfer, gather the required materials from What you need above, then submit the form linked below. The redirect request will be reviewed by digital marketing. You will be contacted when the transfer is approved and functioning.

Processing time is generally 2-3 business days due to the time it takes for records and security certificates to fully propagate; however, this time frame may be extended while we wait for approval from advisors or supervisors.
